Theoretically it would work if I reinstalled the OS, but waiting 4 hours for my system to reinstall every time I want to listen to music is not very practical. I was able to get sound to work right after I updated the software (speakers and headphones worked flawlessly, so definitely NOT a bad headphone jack/speaker), but after one restart volume was back to grayed out and nothing I tried could fix it. NONE of these things fixed my issue - the volume is still grayed out and sound will NOT work (iTunes, quicktime, youtube, etc. Updating to the latest version of High Sierra and attempting all of these processes again Plugging in/unplugging headphones over and over, including during restarts, SMC resets, etc.ħ. Attempting to repair disk permissions with first aidĦ. Quitting coreaudio via activity monitorĥ. Here are the many things I have tried over and over that are NOT fixing my issue:Ĥ. The volume/sound on my MacBook air suddenly stopped working, is grayed out, and shows a not permitted symbol when I try to adjust it.
